Church Theme for 2019

This year, NJMBC will focus on strengthening the family unit.  The strategic focus on the family is twofold: both the physical family (those with whom we share biological relationships or cultural connections) and the spiritual family (those in the body of Christ with whom we have spiritual kinship through the Christian faith.)

The scriptural reference for the theme is Genesis 12:1-3:

1 “Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

It is through this passage of scripture that God affirms His election of the family as a special vehicle through which blessings flow.

During this time in history, God was dealing with a repeatedly rebellious, corrupt humanity as a whole.  But He employed a unique strategy from heaven to accomplish some great things.  He instituted the FAMILY!  But God chose to focus on one particular family among all the families of the earth.  He worked through an unlikely couple --- Abram and Sarai (whose names were later changed to Abraham and Sarah, Gen 17: 5, 15).  God chose this couple for a long term project of blessing the world even though Sarai was unable to have children.  Yet, God spoke a powerful and promising word into this seemingly barren family.

A detailed account of the scripture passage reveals how God commanded Abram to sever his ties to the larger nation as well as the ties to his father’s house (which represents the immediate family). So Abram moved out of his native land into the land of promise.  (The represents an act of separation and sanctification, as well as a moment of strong faith and special favor.)  As a result of his obedience, Abram and his family were blessed with fertility, long life and rich lineage, success, well-being and a good name. This lets us know that there is an important connection between human obedience and divine promise.

As descendants of Abram and members of God’s family, we are blessed beyond measure. Therefore, we should walk according to God’s purpose for our lives and do the following:

  • give precedence and preference to the will of God above all else

Like Abram, we must willingly part from things or people who cause us to compromise our spiritual integrity. We must also abandon all idols and worship the true and living God only.

  • follow God with a steadfast faith and take Him at His word

Like Abram, if we are obedient, we will see that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

So as we readily embrace our theme of “FOCUSING ON THE FAMILY” we must live with integrity and work together as loving family members so the unsaved will see us and want to be a part of God’s family.  Additionally, we must seek God with our whole heart and take back territory that He assigned to us. Most importantly, we must reset our minds and renew our commitment to Christ above all else (our desires, our country, our jobs, our material goods, etc.)

May we all experience an explosion of God’s goodness in 2019 as God performs a good work in us and through us.  I decree and declare that the original plan God purposed for both our physical families and our spiritual families shall prevail in the Name of Jesus!!
