New Jerusalem Baptist church was founded February 3, 1945 by Rev. JR. Chandler. Services were held in private homes until the members were able to purchase land at 12 1/2 and Dunleith and build their first church, now known as "Chandler Chapel". God continued to bless, and many auxiliaries were organized under the leadership of rev chandler. After the death of Rev. Chandler, Rev. JH. Holiday was selected to serve as pastor and served in this capacity for two terms. Sunday, April 10, 1964, Rev. I.C. Mullins
Was elected pastor, serving god and the church for (14) fourteen years. Blessings abounded, and on February 4, 1979, Rev. Samuel J. Cornelius became and spiritual leader of this great church. A man of God, a dynamic preacher, a true believer and a man of vision. Thank you God for sending him our way. Under his leadership- we have become a church of tithers, and god has truly blessed us, just as he promised he would. We've added more ministries, started a Christian education program that includes new members classes, workshops, and activities for the entire month of August. Our vision for a new sanctuary became a reality on January 26, 1992, as we marched from Chandler Chapel to our new sanctuary. In 2002, god blessed us to add a new wing, offices, 5 new classrooms, and a conference room to our new sanctuary. We also adopted a church in Ghana, Africa (Rhema Christian Center). We were able to purchase a van for them and to assist them to build a new sanctuary. We actively participate in the freedom road ministry, where we visit and minister to prisoners. We sponsor “feed my sheep” ministry quarterly where we provide a nourishing meal, clothing and spiritual counseling to the “less fortunate” of the city. We have a mentoring ministry for young girls, tutoring sessions for our school age children, children church every Sunday for the children and youth; Wednesday morning and Wednesday night prayer meeting. In 2004, we opened the “New Jerusalem food pantry” across the street from our chandler chapel. We are open every Monday and feed 300-400 families each month.
Our Christian education department consists of Sunday school with classes for 4yrs to senior adults, annual vacation bible school, NBC (Nurturing Baptist Christians), Wednesday night bible study; Yoti (Youth Of The Inheritance); Rap session –a twice monthly forum to bring all questions and concerns and receive biblical answers; a week-long learning institute in October, a six-week new members class for new converts and/or new members and the dedication of the month of August as Christian education month.
